Although 1980's TV comedians Victor and Barry (Alan Cumming and Forbes Masson) sang about being a 'Kelvinside man, I buy my fish from a van', from the 1950s through to the 1980s, a lot of folk in Glasgow's outlying estates and housing schemes depended on the 'man with the van' to get fresh produce.
In 1948, this former RAF ambulance had been pressed into peacetime service as a mobile shop. Looks like the fishmonger and poulterer had his base in Stockwell Street.
Presumably, if you were too short to reach the serving window, you could stand on that fish box.
